Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy seeks to help the body greatly accelerate its normal healing processesThis can be done by drawing platelets from a sample of the patient’s own blood during a surgical procedure (such as bone grafting). Increasing the number of platelets at the site of a bone undergoing a healing process can help speed up clotting and release growth factors (GF) in the wound. In oral surgery, this is often used to speed up the bone grafting process so that dental implants can be placed sooner. PRP is not limited to bone grafting and has applications in other procedures such as sinus lift, ridge augmentation, cleft lip and cleft palate procedures. PRP is a by-product of the patients own blood and transmission of disease is not a risk factor.

Who can benefit from PRP?

If you are undergoing a procedure that requires the healing of bone or soft tissue, you may benefit from the effects of PRP therapy.

In some cases, there is no need for PRP. Yet in the majority of cases, PRP application can increase the final result of bone density in a graft and help the wound heal more quickly and efficiently.

The Procedure

This therapy is often done in conjunction with a surgical procedure you’re already undergoing. If you choose to add PRP therapy to your procedure, the doctor will take a sample of your blood while you’re under anesthesia and apply it to the site that will require healing.
